Hey guys, I've been getting a lot of requests lately asking if I could show ya'll how I achieved the "Vintage" & "Retro" look on some of my latest videos, in particular Futuristic's "Happy Dance" Check out my new tutorial below! - Jakob Owens
Awesome TRANSITION to make your videos BETTER! (Premiere Pro Tutorial)
When it comes to cool video effects and transitions I have a very awesome but easy to achieve transition effect that will 100% increase your videos quality and uniqueness. A lot of my travel films incorporate this style of shooting/editing and I've gotten countless requests to show you guys how to create this cool transition effect. So watch the video below to learn how to pull this effect off! - Jakob Owens
Bone Thugs Music Video!
Recently I had the pleasure of Directing a few videos for some true legends of the hip-hop genre "Bone Thugs" Our most recent release was "Fantasy" a more fun and lighthearted funk visual unlike most of their work and visuals. For the longest time I've wanted to shoot a video inside a roller rink, and as soon as I heard this record I knew this was the one. Make sure to give it a look, and I hope ya'll enjoy it! - Jakob Owens
Colored with Tropic Colour Vintage LUTS. Tropic Colour's anamorphic flares also overlaid & used.
Words Of Encouragement!
As artists I believe we're often way too critical of ourselves and our work. We become so numb to what we've created, or are creating, that we can't see it through an outside lens. What's just okay to us is amazing to others. I feel like we often aspire for our work to look like someone else's because you're seeing it with such a fresh perspective unlike your own. At the end of the day nobody sees the way you do nobody thinks the way you do, so just create the way you create without self judgement and let that be enough. - Jakob
Do What You Want!
A lot of people think I’m being paid to travel and make these films, and the answer to that assumption is NOT AT ALL. I actually lose money on these trips. I don’t get free hotel stays, I don’t get paid to promote some brand or silly product and I often I pay the way for my friends and family to come along and enjoy the experience with me. It’s not about $ for me, I’ve come to find I just really really enjoy doing it. I love to get out of my comfort zone, explore what this beautiful world has to offer, and capture it on film. The older you get, the more you realize how quickly life passes you by. It sounds so cliche, but we all know it, life seems like life is moving in fast forward sometimes, and we also know it can end in the blink of an eye, without warning. I say all this to say, whatever it is you want to do, do it, and if you can’t yet, then work really hard so you can.
I hope ya'll enjoy my latest travel film "Amazing Thailand" If you're curious as to what gear I used to film and make this video I've included a list of the various pieces of camera equipment I used below.

Tropic Colour X Jakob Owens "Promo Code"
Yo Guys, Jakob Owens Here!
As many of you may or may not know, I’m an affiliate with TROPIC COLOUR, and this week they gave me my own promo code that lets you save 10% off ANYTHING on their online site! So this week use promo code “buffnerd10” and save 10% off anything from LUTS, Lens Flares, Lightroom Presets, Their Master collections and more! They consistently put out the best and most affordable products for filmmakers of all skill levels and I’m continuously excited to be associated with them as they continue to grow and become more recognized for their amazing products!
Recently, Tropic Colour bundled all of their products into various “Collections” where you can buy various of their products together at once and save $. For example in their “LUT Collection” they’ve compiled all 4 LUT Packs together and if you buy the collection you save $20 as opposed to buying them individually. So make sure to check out their various collections listed on their site as well!
Among their previous products they’ve also introduced new LUT Packs, Flare Packs, Light Leaks packs and more. I’ve personally been using the flare packs on my latest videos and they’re by far the best ones I’ve used. I’m not dying that because I’m biased either, they really are the best ones I’ve used and overlaid onto my videos.
Anyways I hope this helps some of you guys and I appreciate you taking the time to read and check this email! Peace guys! Anyways go check out what they have to offer and hopefully you find some awesome stuff that will improve your visuals! - Jakob

Tropic Colour | LUTS, Filmmaking Effects, & Assets
Recently, I was approached by a new company ‘Tropic Colour’ They began as several colorist and filmmakers working in the industry on various commercials, films, and music videos. They were and are familiar with my work and the following I’ve built around products I create and sell to my fellow filmmaker supporters and followers. Their collective of creatives recently decided to form a company that sells a variety of products and filmmaking assets to filmmakers. Their product catalog includes items like LUTS, Music Video Treatment Templates, Anamorphic Flares, Light Leaks, Special Effects Assets like fire, smoke, dust particles and more (Sample Images Below). At the moment you can find a variety of these products on their site www.tropiccolour.com. Not all of their products are fully released yet as they are slowly rolling everything out, but I’ve got a chance not only to use their products first hand but also witness their unreleased products like the anamorphic flares pack, light leaks, particles etc and they’re amazing! They’ve essentially made me an ambassador of their company to help and promote their products in exchange for me having full access to all their products. What I love about this company is the quality of the product for the price pint. No other company is putting out assets like these for filmmakers at such an affordable price point. That’s one of the things they mentioned to me about their company is, that they want to be the best most affordable filmmaking asset company out their for filmmakers of all types. I really love their products and I've been using a lot of their LUTs on recent projects! Not to mention they're much more affordable than other products on the market! I would never endorse or put my name behind something I wouldn't use myself. - Jakob Owens

Jesse Mcartney (Behind The Scenes)
From time to time I want to start sharing some of my favorite videos that I’ve done. When I share them I want to give y’all insight as to why it’s one of my favorites, whether it be some fun BTS shenanigans or backstory or just simply the way the production came together and turned out. I’ve always been pretty transparent when sharing information about my experiences, and I’d love to keep that going by share some fun stories about my favorite pieces of work that I’ve done.
I’m gonna start off with the most memorable one that comes to mind Jesse McCartney’s “Superbad” This one stands out as a favorite for a couple reasons. In 2013 shortly after moving to L.A. Solo a year out of college I was hit with this opportunity as my first “Big” budget video. This was the first real opportunity I had to work with some solid budget and big boy toys and crew. Adimu Colon was heading up the visual project and had brought me on board to Direct/Edit the video, I’m forever grateful for that opportunity because this piece taught me a lot. Production on this project spanned over the course of a month or so, from treatments, pre-production meetings, casting calls, to production and ultimately the final cut. It was by far the most intensive production process I had ever been involved in with a lot on the line. I remember not sleeping the night before the shoot, eager and nervous as last minute changes were thrown into the mix at 11:30pm just hours before our 6am call time. Anxiously, I reviewed the video over and over in my head, to make sure my vision was clear. But as with any set you’ll ever work on, nothing went perfectly, some things didn’t go according to plan, and with the short light of the winter months we had to cut a couple scenes (which I felt were crucial at the time) among some other production issues. Ultimately, we pushed through and even got lucky with a heart shaped airplane writing in the sky which we used as the ending credit shot. We had happened to shoot on Valentines day and someone had scheduled a plane to write a heart in the sky, and we used that to our advantage! The one thing I’ll always remember most is when Jesse pulled me aside after we wrapped and told me that this set was one of the most well run and professional sets he had ever been apart of and that I would be a star one day. That comment really resonated with me, and I’ll forever remember that moment along with how genuine he was as a person, and as an artist. Lastly, the video wouldn’t have been what it was without the help of DP Tom Taugher, steadicam operator Neal Bryant and of course the crew. I'm forever grateful for that production and what it taught me moving forward with my career. Fun Fact: This was my first video to be played nationally in movie theaters before movie previews,Target stores, and Target TV Ads.

Best Export Settings for YouTube! (High Quality Video Uploads)
A proper export is essential to making sure all the handwork you put into directing, lighting, shooting, editing, coloring, your video all come together to look as beautiful as possible! I get a lot of questions about “What are my export settings/process?” especially when it comes to uploading a video for YouTube. Below I’ll show you the exact settings in which I export a video out of Adobe premiere for a YouTube video upload!
In the screenshot above you can see the exact settings that I’ve selected and use for my video export. I pretty much ALWAYS export a video using the video codec “Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), I do this for a couple reasons. The first of which is that this particular codec is the least compressed out of all the codecs. One of the more popular codecs people export in, is the h.264 codec, but I don’t typically export in this codec for the fact that it is a more compressed file and takes a heck of alot more time to export. Secondly, Vevo requires 1080p Proress 422HQ file. A lot of the video files I end up exporting will live on Vevo, and not only that, but if they require a Proress 422HQ file than I’m more than likely going to stick with that for my own personal YouTube uploads as well.
If any of this is still confusing to you, or you’re still unsure about each step to take, then check out the link below. This video is a step by step tutorial on my export process.

Other notable lenses and setups used were the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 lens and the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 lens. The 24-70mm was mainly used for closeup hand held and detailed shots while the 70-200 was used to capture distant and far away moments like waterfalls, trees, clouds etc. I also heavily used my Sonya7sii paired with the Sony/Zeiss 16-35mm f4 lens in my new Ikelite 8inch dome port underwater housing. Most all underwater shots were shot using this combination of camera, lens, and housing.

GoPro HERO5 Review!
On my most recent trip to Hawaii I purchased the new GoPro Hero5! Anytime I go on any adventure or trip I always bring a GoPro, because there are just times where you can’t bring a big camera and you need something small and portable, like A GoPro!
Before this trip I had never used the GoPro 5 (as it was just newly released). As soon as I took it out of the box I ran over to the pool and decided to test it out and put it through it’s paces while I made a review and test shot video! (See below).
My initial impressions with the camera after my trip are as this:
I love the fact that it’s waterproof right out of the box. This is beneficial for a number of reasons, like not needing to carry waterproof cases around, not needing to put it in a case, having direct access to the new touch screen interface to change the GoPros settings, which leads me into the next big plus about GoPro's newest camera.
The new touch screen and menu system on the back of the GoPro is HUGE! I love how simple and easy it is to use. You're now able to dial in your settings when shooting with the GoPro very quickly and with ease. No longer do you have to buy a separate LCD screen to attach (which burned up you batter life anyways) or navigate the menu through the previous 3 buttons and tiny screen on the front etc. The new LCD screen on the back is a major major bonus!
Those 2 factors alone are big enough reasons for me to have sprung for the new GoPro. The ease in which I can now run around and shoot with the GoPro is 10x faster and more efficient. That being said I would have liked to see improvements with the actual quality of the video. It doesn't appear to have gotten any better from the GoPro 4 and after about 2 years since their latest camera release, I was expecting something bigger and better with the image quality.
There are also other various new additions and benefits as well such as the Voice recognition feature, the in camera image stabilization (1080 mode only) 4k at 30fps and 1080 at 120fps, the all black design, and much more. Overall, I love this camera, highly recommend it, and I will surely be using it for awhile to come!

What's In My Camera/Travel Bag!?
Recently I took a trip to Hawaii to get away, relax, and exercise my adventurous spirit. As usual, I had a camera strapped to my hands at all times, and created an epic recap video of my trip and adventures on Oahu, Hawaii. Check it out below.
I’ve always loved traveling and adventuring, but something was different about this trip. I never wanted to leave, who wouldn’t, but I had viciously been bitten by the travel/adventure bug! I now have this burning desire unlike before, to just travel, explore, live life and make videos and document it all!
I've had a lot of questions about the type of gear I use and take on a trip like this. I wanted to create a quick video outlining all the gear I pack into my camera bag to take with me on these trips. So enjoy the video of me showing off all the various types of photo/video gear I take with me to create some epic travel visuals.
You can find an extensive list of links to all of the pieces of gear below the video!

How To Write Music Video Treatments!
Music Video Treatments are the Essential first step when pitching/prepping for a Music Video. The goal of a Music Video Treatment is to write and form a document that defines the video’s concepts and summarizes it through words and visual images.
Often I dread writing treatments, because it can be hard convey the exact images and ideas I have in my head down on a document for someone else to visualize and understand the way I do. I feel that this is the biggest struggle when it comes to writing a treatment, the process of trying to get the client to envision what you envision.
One of the best ways to do this is make your treatments very “Visual” heavy. By “Visual” I mean use a lot of pictures and image references. Clients will have a hard time trying to decipher and understand the words you’re trying to break down, but visual images are easy to understand. Creating a visual story will help really sell your idea and vision to the client and hook them on the idea your pitching.
There’s no real formula or format to writing a treatment. I’ve seen countless styles when it comes to treatments, some more narrative based and wordy, others more visual heavy, some 1 pages, some 8 pages, etc. The point of a treatment, as I said above, is to define the video’s concept and summarize it through words and visual images.
When it comes to writing treatments I like to use a balance of visual/reference images and words. I may explain the story, or list video beats and ideas along with specific scenes and what would be happening in those scenes, but I always make sure to accompany those words with lots of visual representations and images so the client can understand and envision what I’m telling them.
Music videos are heavily visual based, so your treatments should reflect that. Make sure your vision is clear and easy to navigate. You don’t want the client to read a novel and then be left scratching their head when they get to the end. Keep it short and sweet!
Below I’ve listed a link to a product of mine that I sell. Over the years in my music video career I’ve compiled some of my Music Video Treatments into a single product that you can buy and learn from. You will be able to download my various treatments and see how I personally write treatments for various clients from independent artists, to Major Label artists, and record labels.

A good protein powder is essential for anyone looking to build muscle. A lot of protein powders can be stacked with fillers and other non natural ingredients. I like to use Vega Sport Protein powder because it's a clean and plant-based, made from real whole food ingredients. It is Non-GMO Project verified, and vegan certified. Make sure you're putting quality products and supplements into your body!

2. MultiVitamin
Multivitamins are another key component to your bodies overall health and fitness. For the human body to complete all the tasks it has in a normal day, it must be given a wide and complex variety of vital nutrients. Becoming deficient in any one of these essential vitamins or minerals can cause a body efficiency and performance deficiencies goes down quick.
I personally like the Opti-Men Multivitamin for 1 because they're highly rated and you don't have to take 8 pills unlike some vitamin packs. It's a good solid multi-vitamin.

3. Greens
Green Vibrance: http://amzn.to/2alfhGn
When it comes to most peoples eating habits and diet plans a lot is left missing, most of which is usually a key component of any diet, fruits and especially vegetables. Green Vibrance is an awesome way to make sure you get more greens into your daily diet for achieving ultimate health. It can be very challenging to even try to eat a good amount of greens/veggies in a day even if you want too. I take this supplement and use it everyday whether I mix it up in my smoothies or just a simple glass of water. This product is one of the top ones you can find in the "Green" supplement category!

5. Pre Workout
In today's fitness world you'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't take pre-workout before a workout. C4 has become one of my favorite go to pre-workouts along with Muscle Pharms Both products give me great focus and energy in the gym! One of the best things about both of these products are you don't have to load up and large heaping scoops. Both pre-workouts only require a tiny little scoop to get you amped and ready to conquer your workout!

Rhino EVO Slider Review!
Rhino Camera Gear is a manufacturer of professional sliders and stabilization rigs for videographers and photographers alike. Recently, Rhino Camera Gear sent me one of their powered sliders to test out! The Rhino 24" EVO Slider is truly a unique piece of equipment that will surely increase the production value of your video production and photo time lapses. Check out the video below I made where I demonstrate the product and it's capabilities!
The EVO slider is a very durable yet lightweight slider option that is easy to use and transport. The model is available in both 24” and 42” rail sizes, (I received the 24” unit for testing). This carbon fiber body is able to support a load of up to 15 lbs. The carbon fiber rails can be interchanged at any time for stainless steel at any time which can support a much greater weight, but are much heavier.
Right out of the box and case the slider is very user friendly, easy to set up, and fun to use. I had no issues at all while setting up the slider for use. If you do need assistance, they have a very clear and easy to read booklet that explains how to set it up and run the system.
The legs of the slider are very easy to set up and adjust, they lock down strong, giving the slider a strong base. The feet of the legs move and shape to the surface below them, so if you manage to find yourself in some unstable and rocky areas, the legs and feet make it easy to set up regardless. If you want to set the slider up off the ground, the slider comes with a built in mounting plate that will allow you to set it up on a tripod for elevated shots.
Whether you want to manually move the slider and camera with your hands or use Rhino's motion control system and remote, Rhino allows you to have complete control over their slider system. The motion control system is not only useful since it takes your hands away from the camera, but it's also just ALOT of fun to play with!
For those interested in, or looking for a slider, the Rhino EVO Carbon seems like a dream come true. The system is easy to use, durable, lightweight, intuitive, travel friendly, and very very cool!
The Rhino Slider EVO Carbon isn't the cheapest option out there when it comes to sliders, but it certainly is a killer setup that any hardcore videographer or photographer should have in their arsenal.
